Lately, I've seen a few newly engaged couples on social media discussing the high cost of planning a wedding. I'm Jackie, and as an Event Designer, I get it, and one expense that can quietly eat away at your budget is the wedding decor cost in Toronto. Especially when you live in a metropolitan city like Toronto, which is ranked as one of the most expensive cities to live in in Canada.

If you’ve secured your venue and are currently shopping around for decor and wondering what that will cost in Toronto, keep reading. Below, I break down typical costs, the factors that influence pricing, and why it might help in the long-run to work with a professional wedding designer.

What’s the True Wedding Decor Cost in Toronto?

According to Photography by Calin, wedding decor can take up 8–12% of a couple’s total wedding budget. That’s a significant percentage, considering that wedding cakes and rings combined account for less than 8%.

If you're living in Toronto or the GTA, how can you plan a beautiful wedding without going over budget?

First, it’s important to understand that wedding decor goes beyond floral arches and table centrepieces. It also includes:

  • Candles

  • Linens and chair covers

  • Lighting

  • Table décor

  • Photo collages

  • Balloons

  • Customized signage

On average, for a $100, 000 wedding, you can expect to spend a minimum of $8000 on decor. That covers basic floral arrangements, simple centerpieces, and bouquets. Linens, lighting, and chair covers can increase this significantly more.

If you're going for a more high-end wedding experience, you can expect to spend around $60,000 - $100,000 on decor alone, according to Ethereal Creators

Factors That Can Affect Your Wedding Decor Cost

Too often, wedding decor is sidelined in the planning process. But make no mistake: it's the decor that turns a 'space' into a 'sanctuary.' Whether you're hosting a grand gala or a backyard micro-wedding, your surroundings dictate the vibe and experience at your wedding. Curious how to spend that 8-12% budget?

Your Guest List

Large-scale or luxury weddings often use more centrepieces, floral decor, backdrops/statement pieces, and even ceremony arches. Smaller weddings often require less decor, unless your goal is to host a small wedding with a higher-end decor. Simply put, the larger the guest list, the bigger the venue, and the more decor required to bring the wedding to life.

Your Venue

Having a venue that's like a blank canvas allows you to flex your creative muscle and truly decorate the space to match your theme. But that also means a larger decor budget. For example, a venue that already has a raised platform or architectural elements is more cost-effective to decorate than a blank canvas.

Who You Hire

This one goes without saying, but not every wedding designer and decorator is created equal. Yes, I am biased, but hear me out.

Some wedding decor companies (like Party Propz) offer curated décor packages that include floral centrepieces, backdrops, stage tables, and even chairs. You simply choose a package that fits your needs and budget. This allows you to have better control of your costs and to plan accordingly.

For example, our basic stage décor package includes a chandelier, bridal bench, florals, drapery, and backdrop, and typically costs between $600 and $800. Other decor companies might provide a backdrop, but you'll have to add-on centerpieces, candles, and other decor items.

Your Decor Requirements

The more dramatic your decor, the higher the cost will be. For example, tall floral arrangements and more statement accessories can increase the cost of decor. Couples who opt for simple decor with florals and candles generally spend less than those aiming for a more luxurious aesthetic.

Setup and Teardown Fees

If your wedding designer charges a delivery, setup, and teardown fee, this will impact your overall decor cost. Many companies will include this in their decor cost or offer the option of picking up decor yourself. But I wanted to highlight this because not every company includes it as a part of their packages, and the fewer surprise expenses you have, the better.

Lighting

You might already know this, but lighting can completely transform the look of a venue. Neon signs, string lights, light fixtures, uplighting, and similar elements are becoming increasingly popular, but expect to add an additional cost if this is your vibe.

Demand

You might not be able to control much with your wedding vendor prices, but when you choose to host your wedding can greatly impact your cost. Peak wedding seasons, from Spring through early Fall, typically come with higher costs for all wedding activities. This applies to wedding décor as well. Vendors receive more bookings during this time and often increase prices due to high demand.

Now that you understand what percentage of your budget is typically allocated to wedding decor, let’s discuss why hiring professionals is often the best choice.

Hiring a Professional Decorator for Your Wedding

As your guests walk into your wedding venue, the decor can either leave them in awe or staring in confusion. If your goal is admiration, hiring a professional wedding designer and decorator in Toronto is highly recommended.

Wedding decor takes time. From research and rentals to deliveries and setup, professionals work tirelessly behind the scenes to take the burden off your shoulders. Your role becomes supervisory, ensuring everything aligns with your ideas.

Here are some things to consider before you hire a wedding designer/decorator:

  • They're Knowledge and Expertise

As a couple, what you often dream of is the finished product. That fully decorated space you walk into on your wedding day. Decorators, on the other hand, understand everything that happens behind the scenes to make that finished product a reality.

  • Quality Decor Materials

Many decorators offer rental packages for basic items, but if additional items are required, they know exactly where and how to source high-quality materials. Their professional connections often lead to faster responses and better pricing.

  • Their Creativity

You may know your colours and general aesthetic, but decorators understand timing, logistics, and execution. They know when to source materials, how to set them up, and how to manage takedown efficiently. Even with the right decor, a poor setup can ruin the result. Professionals ensure everything is styled correctly.

  • They Save You Money

I know what you think. It already costs money to hire a decorator, so how are they saving you money? Decorators help you make smart, informed decisions and prevent unnecessary purchases. They also protect you from vendors who may try to upsell items you don’t actually need.

Conclusion: Wedding Decor Cost in Toronto

Although wedding decor typically accounts for 8–12% of a wedding budget, you can choose to spend more or less depending on your priorities. Your wedding is personal, and your decor choices should reflect what matters most to you.

There are DIY options and basic rental packages available if you plan to handle setup and takedown yourself. However, if you asked me, I’d strongly recommend hiring a professional wedding designer/decorator. Their work is designed to manage it all for you, so that you can fully enjoy your wedding day.

Pro Tip: Whether you choose DIY or professional décor, ensure you dedicate enough time to planning. Just remember that great results take time.
